At Jordan’s Furniture, we believe you deserve the best night’s sleep. And there’s no better time to evaluate your sleep health than now during Sleep Awareness Week. At Jordan’s, our goal is to offer you guidance on creating the optimal sleep environment. Rest assured, Jordan's Sleep Lab is always here to help. With our exclusive BridgeIT™ technology, our trained Sleep Techs evaluate your sleep habits to help you find the right mattress and pillow for the way you sleep. Make sleep a priority and improve your physical and mental health by following our sleep tips.
Why is sleep important?
In addition to sustaining physical health, quality sleep benefits your mental health. Sleep is essential for allowing your body and mind to recharge, so you wake up refreshed and ready to face the day. Sleep deprivation can affect your ability to make decisions, slow down reaction times, result in mood swings, and dull your creativity.
How do I improve sleep quality?
To get the most sleep benefits, it helps to be consistent with the time you go to bed and get up, even on weekends. You should also stick to a consistent routine regarding mealtimes, and exercise. Try to avoid eating heavy foods, caffeine, and alcohol before bedtime.
How much sleep do I need?
Eight hours per night is a good general guideline for adults. It is important to get enough sleep, partly because certain stages of sleep – deep sleep and REM sleep – help your body physically repair itself and boost your immune system. Many studies have shown that not getting enough REM sleep can interfere with memory formation. If you’re a light sleeper, you may not be getting as much of these important benefits.
How do I sleep better?
In addition to a healthy routine regarding meals and exercise, your environment is equally important. A quiet, cool, dark place is the most conducive to better sleep. For most people, noise is a sleep distraction, though white noise such as ocean waves can help induce sleep. Light should be minimal, and too much can disrupt circadian rhythms, fooling your body into thinking it’s daytime. Using blackout drapes and sleep masks can help with this issue. In general, the ideal sleeping temperature should be set between 60 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit. At Jordan’s Furniture, we understand that many people sleep hot, so we offer cooling mattresses and temperature-regulating accessories like pillows and mattress protectors that can help.
What’s the best sleeping position?
The ideal sleep position offers the best spine alignment from your head to your hips. Depending on health and preferences, side and back sleepers get the most spine alignment benefits. In general, side sleepers have less back pain, and sleeping this way can reduce heartburn, and snoring. Back sleepers can experience relief from lumbar spinal pain, neck pain, or nasal congestion. Stomach sleepers usually get fewer benefits because sleeping this way increases pressure on the spine.
How do I choose the right mattress?
As you’ve probably heard, the right mattress for one person isn’t necessarily the right one for you. Visit any Jordan’s Sleep Lab, and you can try out over 90 different mattresses. In general, we recommend a plush mattress for super soft cloud-like sleep, a firm mattress if you prefer extra support, and a medium mattress for an ideal balance of plush and firm. We know choosing a mattress can be confusing, so our Sleep Techs will use BridgeIT™ to create a sleep profile that pairs you with the right mattress and pillow for your needs.
