Playtime is not just for the kids anymore. Thanks to all the advances in technology it’s now possible to create an arcade right in your own home without actually looking like an arcade. Choose your elements of fun and let the good times roll… The Space || The square-footage of your space will determine how you choose to fill it. Be mindful that most game tables require 3-5 feet of additional space around them in order to play comfortably. Lighting is also important as some games require more direct lighting than others; while if you decide to focus on digital gaming / theater you will need adjustable lighting. The Furniture || Regardless of how much space you are working with creating a bar area is possible from bar carts to bar cabinets to built-in bars! Are you a digital gaming guru / movie maven? Splurge on comfy theater seating that reclines and is equipped with cup holders and USB ports. Are traditional table games more your style? Fill the room with pub tables and bar stools so people have a place to relax and snack while they wait their turn. The Fun || Now that you have the basic design layout you can choose the fun! You can’t go wrong with a pool table, foosball table, or air hockey table, but if space is limited consider games that don’t take up as much space in the room such as darts or shuffleboard. Keep some vintage board games on hand for a nostalgic twist!
The children have moved out; now what? You’re not quite ready to let go of the house you raised your children in, but now you have extra rooms that need a refresh. It’s a bittersweet feeling, but there are many things you can do to fill the space. It’s time to reflect on all the things you said you’d do “once the kids are gone” and make it happen! Here are a few ideas to get you started on this new adventure… The Man Cave || Equipped with a projection screen to view the big game, plush leather recliners that have built-in cup holders, pub tables complete with barstools, a mini fridge so you don’t have to go far to replenish, and a shuffleboard table to keep the fun going through half-time! The Home Office || Design an inspiring space that reflects your personality and style and that will keep you motivated! For him: A rich mahogany desk with an oversized leather chair and a file chest topped with decanters of the finest libations of choice. For her: A whitewash desk with a tufted chair and a bookcase reimagined with a few photographs, candles, and of course books! For the Yogi || Transform this room into an oasis of relaxation with a minimalist approach. Soft lighting created by decorative sconces and hurricanes filled with pillar candles will make you feel as though you are at the spa. Create a focal point with a large landscape painting that best suits your personality and will help bring you to that meditative state. Complete the look with a superbly soft shag rug and oversized pillows to create a hygge [Scandinavian word for a mood of coziness & comfortable conviviality with feelings of wellness & contentment] vibe that soothes your soul. For the Fashionista || Create the ultimate closet complete with shelving that displays your shoes, a three-way mirror to make sure you’re looking great at every angle, a jewelry chest for all those costume jewels and a hidden safe for the real ones, and lastly a plush chaise lounge (because with a closet this amazing you’ll want to sit for a minute and revel in it).
Being in New England there is nothing more nourishing than dining al fresco for the first time after a long winter. With just a few key pieces you can create a magical ambiance regardless of the size of your space… Seating || The traditional outdoor table with chairs is a great standard, however if you are short on space consider an outdoor sectional or loveseat and chair paired with a table! Adding plush textures to your outdoor space will create a cozy atmosphere with a touch of indoor luxury. With endless configurations from long farm tables with benches to high top tables with barstools, you can create multiple conversation spots by mixing and matching these pieces if your space allows. Don’t forget the chaise lounge for those afternoon naps in the sun!   Rug || An outdoor rug is a great way to soften the patio or define a dining space in your backyard if you don’t have a patio. Whether you choose a vibrant print or a laid-back solid, a rug will warm the space making shoes optional. And in fabrics that are stain resistant and fast-drying you won’t have to worry about New England’s unpredictable weather. Ambiance || Create an ethereal vibe by stringing twinkling lights or hanging Moroccan lanterns from your house or trees above. Keep those pesky insects at bay in style by placing pillar-style citronella candles in tall glass hurricanes. Complete the setting with a fire pit. Not only will it aid in keeping insects away, it will also provide warmth for those chillier nights. Campfire reimagined.
Spring is in the air, which means summer is not far off! Now is the best time to start getting your backyard ready for epic gatherings that last until the stars fill the sky and the moon shines bright. Even those hot and humid days lead to cooler evenings – warm your outdoor space with a fire pit that is so hot its cool… Ambiance || Determine the ambiance you want to create. Do you want your fire pit to be the place guests flock to after dinner? If so, then consider a low fire pit that pairs well with outdoor sofas, poufs, and cushy chairs. Is your backyard space limited? You can still create an inviting retreat by opting for a fire pit table! Fire pit tables offer the same inviting ambiance with enough space to enjoy a delicious summer meal. There are even high-top styles that are perfect for an urban setting! Placement || Though most portable fire pits have guards and/or safety features, it is still important that you are mindful of where you place yours and how close the seating is. Be sure to leave at least 4ft between your home and your fire pit/fire pit table. Do not position it under an enclosed overhang. For low-profile fire pits, it is best to position the seating around 2ft away from the flame. If you have a fire pit table, it is okay to pull seating in since there is usually 8-10 inches of table space between you and the flame. Extras || Complete your backyard retreat with decorative elements to enhance the ambiance like string lights, outdoor plants, or a rug for an added layer of cozy! Have blankets handy too since some nights will be chillier than others. While campfires naturally fuel good conversation and laughter, games will also help to keep the party going well into the night!
It's the heart of the home; the place where casual dining meets entertainment and everything in between. For some of you, the family room is the most used room in the house which is something you want to keep in mind when you are shopping for furniture to fill the space. Area Rug || We always say it’s best to design from the bottom up. Starting with the area rug will help you develop a color palette for the room while providing a cozy treat for your feet. Seating || L-shaped and U-shaped configurations promote conversation and provide a clear view of the television. Oversized sectionals will create the L-shape and sometimes includes reclining seats and/or a chaise lounge all in one piece! Another option is to mix and match a sofa (maybe a sleeper if you don’t have a guest room) with a chaise lounge, accent chairs, or a recliner to create a little dimension in the room. Due to the amount of traffic this room will see, aim for high performance fabrics like Sunbrella or Microfiber as they are both stain and fade resistant. Or if leather is more your style, seek out the pieces with a lacquer finish as they will be the most durable leather when maintained properly. Storage || Beauty can meet function with your media storage. Wall units create a focal point while hiding all of those unsightly wires and consoles. Personalize it by adding your favorite books, picture frames, or nostalgic knick-knacks. Tables || The family room table as evolved over the years, with the oversized ottoman topped with a tray being the latest trend. The ottoman is great because when not being used as a place to rest your drink, it can serve as a place to rest your feet. Some even have hidden storage!
The industry’s top home furnishing designers gathered in High Point, NC to showcase their latest collection to prospecting retail buyers and interior designers for the biannual High Point Market. High Point Market is the equivalent to Fashion Week in the fashion world – it is the largest home furnishings industry trade show in the world, providing insight to new products and the latest trends in home décor… Mixed Media || Unique materials like concrete, metal, and stone are paired with more traditional elements like glass and wood to create an unexpected twist on classic silhouettes. Highlights include pieces like a writing desk or sofa table that feature metal bases topped with stone. Va Va Velvet || What once was a textile we only saw in the fall and winter months is now making an appearance in spring and summer! Slightly lighter in texture for the season, this fabric is being shown in both airy pastels and bold brights from pillows to ottomans to add a fun punch of color to your home. Flora & Fauna || While it’s not out of the ordinary to see an abundance of floral patterns for the warmer months, this design staple was spiced up with a dash of fauna this season! Birds and blooms mingle with leafy vines on poufs, bedding, and accent chairs. Nature's Neutrals || Bring the outdoors inside with textural raffia, rattan, or wicker. Furniture constructed of these natural elements provide a lighter look for the season while maintaining a refined look. Go coastal with the addition of shiplap or rope elements. Perfectly Imperfect || The Japanese design aesthetic known as wabi sabi – the art of living with imperfection, was prominent at this market. The trend highlights the inherent beauty of asymmetry and furniture pieces that are designed to purposefully look unfinished.
Buying a leather furniture set is an investment so it is important to learn what kind of leather fits your lifestyle best before purchasing. Will it be in a high-traffic area like the family room or the man cave? Or will it be in the formal living room that is only used during the holidays? There are four factors to keep in mind when shopping for leather furniture. Origin || Which layer of the hide is your furniture derived from - top grain or split grain? Top Grain comes from the top layer of the hide and is most desirable for its appearance and elasticity. Split Grain is the lower layers of the hide and has a tougher feel with less elasticity. Alterations || All leather is graded purely based on characteristics; there is no industry standard for grading. Full Grain leathers are not altered and are meant to show the full life that the animal lived. Desirable characteristics include insect bites, healed scars, and wrinkles and can be found anywhere on the piece. Undesirable characteristics are placed on the furniture back and sides. Only 10% of leathers are classified as full grain and are graded at a higher price point. Corrected Grain leathers have numerous undesirable and desirable characteristics and will be buffed and/or embossed to diminish the appearance of the natural characteristics and create a more even hide. Dyeing || Aniline Dyed hides are tumbled in a vat resulting in a somewhat transparent appearance like stain that is applied to wood. This process is used on the majority of full grain leathers. Pigment Dyed hides are sprayed with a dye that is similar to latex paint, but with more elasticity to accommodate the flexibility of the hide. This process can be prone to peeling and flaking and is better for low traffic areas. Semi-Aniline Dyed hides are vat-dyed first, then sprayed with pigment dye resulting in an opaque appearance, but with proper maintenance will not peel or flake. Top Coat || The leather’s ability to resist stains and scratches will depend on the type of finish the tannery applies to the hide. Lacquer top coats are typically used on corrected grain hides that have been semi-aniline dyed. It is the highest performing top coat offering the most resilience and is available in either a low luster or high sheen. Hard Wax is known for its “broken in” look as the leather will crinkle over time. Most often used on full grain, aniline dyed hides, this top coat offers good stain resistance when properly maintained, but is prone to scratching in high traffic areas. Wax/Oil Pull-up is only used on full grain, aniline dyed hides. Immediately after dying, hides are immersed in a vat of wax, oil, or both. The substances emulsify resulting in that buttery soft feeling. The hide is then stretched creating a lightening effect known as “pull-up.” This method receives no top coat and will scratch easily and stain when exposed to oil-based substances such as pet and human hair. Low traffic areas are best suited for wax/oil pull-up pieces.
As summer winds down (sigh) and those cool mornings and nights slowly close in on the day that can only mean one thing (okay maybe two): FOOTBALL season is here! You’ve been cheating on your comfy sectional all summer with your outdoor furniture – now it’s time to take that party inside! Invite your friends & family over for the game and whip up that comfort food like a DIY mac & cheese bar! The Noodles || Start with your basic mac & cheese… Ingredients: Makes 6-8 servings, double as necessary 2 cups milk 2 tablespoons butter 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 (10-oz.) block extra sharp Cheddar cheese, shredded 1/2 (16-oz.) package elbow macaroni, cooked Directions: 3 easy steps! 1. Preheat oven to 400° - microwave milk at HIGH for 1 1/2 minutes. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium-low heat; whisk in flour until smooth. Cook, whisking constantly, for 1 minute. 2. Gradually whisk in warm milk, and cook, whisking constantly, 5 minutes or until thickened. 3. Whisk in salt, black pepper, 1 cup shredded cheese, and, if desired, red pepper until smooth; stir in pasta. Spoon pasta mixture into a lightly greased 2-qt. baking dish; top with remaining cheese. Bake at 400° for 20 minutes or until golden and bubbly. The Toppings || Then add your favorite meats! BBQ Pulled Pork || Sweet & southern inspired. Ingredients: Makes 6-8 servings, double as necessary 1 teaspoon vegetable oil 1 (4 pound) pork shoulder roast 1 cup barbecue sauce 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar 1/2 cup chicken broth 1/4 cup light brown sugar 1 tablespoon yellow mustard 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 1 tablespoon chili powder 1 extra large onion, chopped 2 large cloves garlic, crushed Directions: 3 easy steps! 1. Pour the vegetable oil into the bottom of a slow cooker. Place the pork roast into the slow cooker; pour in the barbecue sauce, apple cider vinegar, and chicken broth. Stir in the brown sugar, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, chili powder, onion, and garlic. Cover and cook on high until the roast shreds easily with a fork, 5 to 6 hours. 2. Remove the roast from the slow cooker, and shred the meat using two forks. Return the shredded pork to the slow cooker, and stir the meat into the juices. 3. Serve it up in your favorite dish with a spoon so guests can easily scoop and top their mac & cheese! Buffalo Chicken || Savory with a kick! Ingredients: Makes 6-8 servings, double as necessary 6 boneless skinless chicken breasts 1 (12 oz.) bottle buffalo wing sauce 2 tablespoons ranch mix seasoning 2 tablespoons butter Directions: 3 easy steps! 1. In medium bowl, combine the buffalo wing sauce, butter, and ranch seasoning. 2. Place chicken breasts in lightly greased slow cooker. Pour hot sauce mixture over chicken and cook on low for 6-8 hours. 3. Shred chicken breasts in the slow cooker and serve! Lobster || New England classic! Ingredients: Makes 6-8 servings, double as necessary 6-8 1lb lobsters Salt Directions: 3 easy steps! 1. In a pot large enough to comfortably hold the lobster, fill the water 2 inches from the top adding 2 tbsp of salt for each qt of water. 2. Bring water to a rolling boil & steam each lobster individually for 7 minutes. 3. Shuck & serve in small pieces so it can be easily folded into the mac & cheese!
