What size rug do you need?
Use our sizing tips to find the rug size that's perfect for you.
Most people shop for a rug based on its appearance and understandably so, but ultimately you'll want a rug that will complement your interior space. The size of the rug you choose, not just the appearance, can change the dynamic of the room. For example, a 5x8 rug and an 8x10 rug may both fit a room nicely, but if placed properly, the bigger rug can actually make the room appear larger. Here are recommendations for sizing your Living Room, Bedroom and Dining Room Rug based on common rug sizes:
Define dimensions of the room with a measuring tape. Keep at least 18” of bare floor exposed by the rug's edges.

5'x8'
Smaller rugs will typically be placed under the coffee table, with the rest of the furniture off the rug.

8'x10'
Mid-sized rugs allow for some furniture to be placed partially on the rug while the remaining stays completely off.

9'x12'
Larger rugs generally have all the furniture placed upon it and tend to make the room appear bigger.
Your rug should be sized to fit the room, not the table. Remember to keep 18” of bare floor exposed by the rug's edges and chairs should sit comfortably on the rug with 18”-24” of rug on all sides, for chairs to get pushed back.

8' Round
Round rugs are a great choice for round tables with 4 to 6 chairs.

8'x10'
Mid-sized rugs work well under a table with 6 to 8 chairs.

9'x12'
Larger rugs are the perfect choice under a table with 8 to 10 chairs.
Whether you place your rug under the bed or next to it, make sure there is at least 18” of rug on either side of bed, to step onto.

5'x8'
Smaller rugs can be placed under a small bed or along side a larger one.

8'x10'
Mid-sized rugs work well when placed horizontally under the top or bottom half of a bed.

9'x12'
Larger rugs can be placed horizontally under a bed and allows for the rug to be exposed along three sides.
