This has been a challenging and difficult time during the past few weeks. The Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has created unusual and uncertain times for all of us, our country, and the world – and we want to thank each of you for your devotion to each other and our wonderful and special company. We consider the J-Team to be family, which has been true for 100 years and it is true today. We do not take these decisions lightly, but unfortunately this is necessary to secure our future as a family. Words cannot express how proud we are to work with you. Below are details that you need to know.
We are paying everyone through Sunday April 12, but we cannot continue to do so. Today, we are announcing a furlough. Your employment relationship is not being terminated; instead, we are placing you on a temporary furlough due to lack of work. The Furlough Period begins Monday April 13 and continues indefinitely. Our goal is to reunite the team gradually as business increases. You will receive a phone call from your manager or supervisor soon to discuss the details and answer your questions.
Jordan’s will continue to pay its weekly contribution as well as your weekly contribution for health and dental insurance until further notice. We feel strongly about doing this for you during this difficult time. We have more information about voluntary benefits in the FAQ section below.
We will retain a small team to support the operation and our long-term plans. We will survive this and emerge stronger than ever! In addition, the entire Executive Team will take a reduction in pay to further manage and control costs. We know you have questions, and we hope that the sections below will answer them for you.
I am furloughed. Am I terminated?No. We hope that this is a short-term situation and we will all return to work soon. We anticipate that business activity will resume gradually after the Furlough Period ends when many consumers will be looking for new furniture and services.
Will I be paid during the Furlough Period?You will receive your last paycheck from Jordan’s on April 17th for week ending April 12th, however you should apply for unemployment benefits in order to be paid for the time you are furloughed which begins on April 13th.
Can I apply for unemployment during the Furlough Period?Yes. Employees may apply for unemployment benefits online on Monday, April 13, not before. We included information following this letter titled “Resource Information” that is published by the unemployment agencies in the states where we operate, which provide information about applying for unemployment benefits. You should apply for unemployment benefits in the state in which you work. Each state determines eligibility separately, and we cannot advise you on eligibility status or amounts. However, we encourage you to apply for unemployment benefits during the Furlough Period. Congress and the Massachusetts legislature recently updated the benefit eligibility requirements for this pandemic, and provided enhanced unemployment benefit information.

Will I get my job back after the Furlough ends?We will do our best to return to full strength, but unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that. The duration of the pandemic is uncertain, and ultimately the answer depends on business conditions after it ends. After our stores and DC are cleared to reopen, our goal is to bring back everyone as business increases.
What will happen to my benefits during the Furlough Period?Jordan’s will continue to pay its weekly contribution as well as your weekly contribution for health and dental insurance until further notice. We feel strongly about doing this for you during this difficult time.
For voluntary benefits including supplemental insurances (Life, AD&D, LTD) critical care, identity theft, vision, Met Life and group legal, Jordan’s will pay the full weekly premiums including your contribution during the Furlough Period until further notice; however, you will be required to reimburse Jordan’s through weekly payroll deductions for your voluntary benefits after the furlough ends.
401k contributions and company matching will be discontinued temporarily. Regarding 401k loan deductions, you may send payments to the Jordan's Payroll department while on furlough. If not, the missed deductions will be withheld from your pay when you return from furlough.
Health Savings Account (HSA) and Flexible Spending Account (FSA) employee contributions will be suspended during the furlough. You are required to make up the missed contributions after you return to work.
What will happen to my PTO during the Furlough Period?You will not accrue additional PTO time during the Furlough Period. Your unused PTO balance will be available when you return to work, after the furlough ends. The notion of using PTO during the Furlough Period is not advised because it will affect your eligibility for unemployment benefits and the amount of your unemployment benefits. Since enhanced unemployment benefits are available, such as an additional $600 per week for four months, we urge you not to use your PTO.
Should I check emails and voicemails, or do other work during the Furlough Period?No. To comply with legal obligations, J-Team members on furlough cannot check voicemail or email, or do other work. This is truly time off from work and we do not want anyone on furlough checking emails or voicemails. If you believe that you have work that should be addressed during the Furlough Period, please speak with your supervisor or manager as soon as possible. We will suspend network access on Monday April 13, which is normal for circumstances like this. Please follow the instructions below:
- “I am out of the office and do not know when I will return. Please direct your inquiry to __(provide the contact information for the person assuming responsibility for the work)__ . Thank you.”

We know this is a particularly stressful and uncertain time. We will do our best to monitor information from health experts and government officials, and communicate with you often during the Furlough Period. Even though legal restrictions prevent us from discussing business with you during the furlough, we hope you know that we truly care about you, want you and your family to stay safe, and we look forward to reuniting with everyone as soon as possible!
