Mattresses | The Mattress of Your Dreams | Jordan's Furniture Life&Style Blog

Since you spend approximately one third of your life sleeping, your choice of mattress is too important to take lightly. With a combination of research, knowing your sleep habits, and trying out different types of mattresses, you can discover the perfect mattress for you, and the way you sleep. Knowledge isn’t just power – it can truly help you experience a better night’s sleep, and an overall healthier and more productive life. One thing to keep in mind when choosing a mattress is that a higher-priced one doesn’t always mean better quality, especially if it doesn’t feel comfortable to you. In addition, other factors like noise and light levels, temperature, and sleep clothing affect how well you sleep.

Mattress Types || When choosing a new mattress, it helps to know about the main types, their properties, and how they function. The most traditional mattress type that most people are familiar with is the innerspring coil model. In general, the more coils you have, the more support and comfort you’ll enjoy. In addition, this type offers a springy bounce, cooling properties, and strong edge support. If you prefer softer support, a pillow-top mattress offers a cloud-like feel with an added layer of cushioning over coiled layers or other materials. Memory foam conforms to your body for great support, and pressure relief. Depending on the type of foam, this mattress type can feel hot. Another option is Latex foam, which also offers excellent bounce, body-conforming comfort, and cooling properties. To achieve that “Goldilocks” just right sleep surface, a hybrid mattress might be the ideal choice for you, as it features a combination of foam, coils, and other material layers.

Firmness & Support || It’s easy to confuse the terms firmness and support. It can be very subjective, and varies from person to person. Generally, firmness has to do with how comfortable a mattress feels initially, while support refers to the proper alignment of your spine without creating pressure points that contribute to soreness and discomfort. Trying out a mattress makes perfect sense because initially a mattress might feel fine, but over time it may not be providing adequate support.

Sleep Position || One of the main characteristics of sleep is the position that feels most comfortable to you, whether it’s on your side, back, stomach, or a combination. Your sleep position helps determine the type of mattress that will probably work best for you. In addition, your pillow is equally important in helping you achieve a good night’s sleep. Typically, side sleepers don’t always stay in the same position, so they usually do best with soft to medium levels of firmness – a mattress that conforms to the contours of their body. Back sleepers usually do better with a mattress that’s firmer. If the mattress is too soft, it will create pressure points, putting the spine out of alignment. Stomach sleepers mainly need excellent support, because the torso applies the most pressure to the mattress, and if the mattress center sinks, it can cause the spine to curve, leading to lower back pain.
