Cinco de Mayo Fiesta || Serve up refreshing Mexican cocktails

The month of May is when we begin to truly savor spending time outdoors with a refreshing cocktail. It’s also the kickoff to many warm-weather celebrations, including Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, and Cinco de Mayo. If you enjoy unwinding with family and friends, and celebrating lively Mexican culture, Cinco de Mayo is May’s first opportunity to host a fun fiesta al fresco. To make the party memorable, start with a refreshing cocktail like a margarita, cerveza beer, or even sangria (technically Spanish, but we can dispense with formalities here).

Your soiree doesn’t have to be outside, but either way you should plan to have a casual place like a kitchen island to prepare your celebratory cocktails and chips and salsa. You may also need to update your space with a well-organized bar or dining set to serve guests. The whole idea of Cinco de Mayo is to ensure friendly fun at a leisurely pace. Mariachi music and sombrero hats optional.

So, what should you serve at your Cinco de Mayo bash?
There are plenty of options to please everyone’s taste. How about something classic and sweet to start,
like a Coconut Margarita?

Coconut Margarita
Just the right blend of refreshing and sweet for all your summer celebrations! Say olé!

Ingredients: (Makes 1 individual cocktail)

2 ounces of tequila

1 ounce of fresh lime juice

1 ounce of coconut puree (available at your supermarket; also great for piña coladas)

Sprinkle of cinnamon and sugar

Directions:

Place all ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice and shake for at least 20 to 30 seconds. Strain over a large ice cube. Sprinkle a mix of cinnamon and sugar over the top.

If you want to serve something just as refreshing as a margarita, but without the fruity sweetness, try a Michelada. This Mexican beer cocktail will give your celebration tropical vibes with true south-of-the-border sizzle.

Michelada
Refreshing and cool, and seasoned with savory hotness!

Ingredients: (Makes 2 individual cocktails)

Coarse salt

Lime wedges

Ice cubes

6 dashes of hot sauce (Tabasco is classic)

3 dashes of Maggi seasoning (umami-rich concentrated flavor enhancer) or soy sauce

1 to 3 dashes of Worcestershire sauce

1/4 to 1/3 cup of lime juice

1 bottle (12-oz.) of beer (Corona is classic)

Directions:

Place coarse salt in a shallow dish, then glide a lime wedge around the rims of two cocktail glasses. Dip the rims into the salt, shaking off excess. Fill glasses with ice. In a small pitcher, combine hot sauce, Maggi seasoning, Worcestershire sauce and lime juice. Add beer. Pour mixture into glasses over ice, and garnish with lime wedges.

If you want to combine Cinco de Mayo with a Mother’s Day brunch, why not go for a Mexican Bloody Mary? It’s all about the spicy kick, and this Mexican version uses tequila and jalapeño juice to make it deliciously caliente (hot). You can adjust spicy hotness with more or less jalapeño juice, pepper sauce and horseradish.

Bloody Maria
Classic brunch cocktail with a Mexican twist!

4 cups of chilled tomato juice
