Follow the Rug Pattern | The path to the most elegant room begins on your floor

Follow The Rug Pattern || The path to the most elegant room begins on your floor

One of the simplest ways to set the tone for any room is with an area rug. Whether you make a statement with an intricately patterned rug or go the minimalist route with a muted tone-on-tone rug, you can enhance the beauty and comfort of your space with one that fits your needs. Whatever your design scheme, you can find a rug that complements your vision – from classic Persian designs with multiple hues to abstract patterns that mimic ocean waves or sandy beaches. One of the first decisions you should make is whether you want the rug to be a focal point or blend in with other room features like upholstery, window treatments, and wall art. Also, think about how your room will function. For example, you may not want anything too bright or busy-looking for a bedroom if you want it to be a calm retreat. For a transitional space that sees high traffic, like an entryway or hallway, you’ll need something especially durable. A flatweave rug is a good option because it’s generally easier to keep clean than a tufted high-pile rug. An indoor/outdoor rug is another excellent option because it’s designed to withstand daily wear. Another important factor is rug size. In general, your rug size should be one size smaller than the room size – for example, an 8’x10’ rug for a 10’x12’ room.

From classic to Persian to modern abstract patterns, the right rug will truly enhance your room.

Traditional Patterns || The most enduring area rug styles often boast intricate patterns originating from Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, often with center medallions or floral/botanical motifs with a different border pattern. Deep reds and blues are typically offset with other colors like ivory and gold in hand-tufted wool. These traditional area rugs add Old World character to your space, and many new styles have vintage-faded hues that make them look like treasured antiques. Classic designs work especially well as room focal points. Beautiful traditional variations include rugs with Greek key borders, arabesque motifs, and fringed ends for the finishing touch.

Modern Motifs || If you’re putting together a room that’s more eclectic, a rug with an abstract motif can add an intriguing – even cutting edge – look. Some modern free-form designs mimic waves, clouds, wood grains, tree branches, and other natural motifs. Bolder designs suggest modern paintings with splatters, crosshatched lines, and brush strokes. If you prefer a subtler look, contemporary tonal rugs might feature just a hint of pattern awash in variations of grey, cream, and tan. It’s also fun to mix styles. You might have a traditional-style room with a contemporary rug to give it a unique flair. A transitional-style rug can give you the best of both worlds: a traditional design, but perhaps in an unexpected colorway.

Indoor/Outdoor || A great way to give your outdoor space an upgrade is with a patterned area rug. Designed to withstand weather conditions, these indoor/outdoor flatweave-style rugs are usually mold- and mildew-resistant, too. Indoor/outdoor rugs are also great for high traffic areas inside your home, and most often feature casual designs like stripes, diamonds, vines, or even solids with a defined border. They’re also ideal if you have pets because they are easier to clean.
