Dining In Style || Serve up a feast with the right tables, chairs, bars & buffets

As you plan gatherings with family and friends this holiday season, it’s a good time to take stock of your dining room and kitchen, and ensure your space functions well and looks festive. First on the furniture menu should be the right table and seating to anchor the room. In general, a rectangular table will be more formal and traditional, while a round or square table will probably work better in a smaller casual space. If you’re expecting extra guests, a table with a leaf or two is perfect. Chairs should be sturdy, comfortable, and easy to move around. Storage and serving flexibility are equally important for hosting a successful soiree. If you have the space, a hutch and console combination will let you store dinnerware and linens, as well as decorative items that personalize it, and the console should be spacious enough to use as a buffet server. In place of a console or buffet, a bar cart with wheels can act as an impromptu server – especially welcome in a smaller room.

Casual vs. Formal || While most dining spaces today lean toward the casual, during holidays and special occasions, a formal setting might look and feel more impressive and suitable, depending on your decorating tastes. Whether you prefer a grand banquet-worthy oblong table, cozy farmhouse dining table or modern round table for intimate groups, your dining set should be made to last, and encourage friendly conversation. Dining together is when lasting memories are made so your room should set the tone accordingly.

Mixed Company || Any gathering with mixed groups of people is bound to be more fun and interesting. The same is true of your dining room set up. Try mixing a bench in with matching chairs or use chairs in different styles or upholstery fabrics to avoid the overly matchy-matchy look. A bench offers flexible options because you can usually fit about three to five guests on one. Try using different style arm chairs at the two heads of the table, with the remaining chairs matching. A sophisticated designer touch is to have dining chairs that feature one fabric on the inside with a coordinating or contrasting fabric on the outside. Also, consider people of different age groups in your gathering. For example, an older person may prefer plusher upholstery, and children might feel more comfortable in smaller size chairs. If you live in an apartment or smaller space, folding chairs can be a godsend, especially if you have a few last-minute additions to your guest list.

Friendly Servers || Complete your dining set-up with buffets, hutches, bars, and consoles that provide ample storage, and offer convenience when serving guests. These entertaining essentials keep everything you need within easy reach. Depending on the layout of your space, it’s ideal to have a separate prep space or bar area that won’t interfere with your sit-down meal space. Having a bar or bar with wine storage is great for guests to mingle around, and keeps them out of the way of the cook.
