Cocktails, Coffee & Conversation || Entertain visitors around a stylish, multifunctional table

As with so many of today’s furniture pieces, cocktail tables have multiple uses, and are available in more styles and finishes than you can imagine. Though a relatively recent invention in the furniture world, cocktail or coffee tables – occasional tables is the broader category name – are indispensable when you invite family and friends to visit, especially during holiday times. Originally used to hold your cup of tea during late Victorian times, this table evolved into the coffee table as coffee became a more popular beverage. Once televisions became common household items in the 1950s, these tables were lowered in height so they wouldn’t block views of the TV set, plus they were used for impromptu buffet meals, and for snacks.

Today, these tables offer even more versatility with models that come with inside storage compartments; casters for mobility; lift-top styles that convert from a coffee table to an instant dining table; and cocktail ottomans designed to rest your feet on, and to hold trays on top for snacks or decorative items. Depending on your space, there are also sofa tables, primarily placed behind the sofa to hold a lamp, and equipped with drawers for holding remotes and other media accessories. Whether you choose the classic rectangular cocktail table centered inside your sofa and upholstered chairs, or decide on round nesting tables that offer more flexibility, you’ll find this furniture gets far more than just “occasional” use.

It’s Hip To Be Rectangular || The most commonly used cocktail table is rectangular. This suits many living rooms perfectly because they tend to be large, and rectangular. It also accommodates socializing well when placed in the center of a seating arrangement, making it easier to place a beverage like coffee on the top, or a plate filled with snacks. Likewise, kids can easily sit on the floor and read a book or play games on its lower height. Try using two identical square tables instead of one rectangular table, especially if you want to add symmetry to the space.

Make The Rounds || A round cocktail table may be your best option for a smaller space. It’s easier to squeeze more chairs and people around it. Even better if you have it on casters for mobility.
Or, a group of
nesting tables offers even more configurations, placed in different spots around a room to accommodate guests.

Relax & Savor Some Snacks || If you prefer softer edges, and really go for comfort, an upholstered cocktail ottoman is the perfect choice. In addition to kicking your feet up on it, you can place a handy tray on top for snacks, beverages, and a magazine or book to read while you relax. You can go with a casual upholstered version for your family room, or maybe you prefer one in rich tufted leather with nailhead trim to make it more of a focal point in your living room.
