Casual, Collected & Cozy

Bohemian Allure || Decorating with free-spirited details

Bohemian, commonly known as “boho,” is one of the most versatile and relaxed room styles. Think of it as a modern interpretation of hippie chic. Characterized by neutral colors like white, cream, grey, green, and brown, boho interiors have a casual, collected, and cozy look and feel. Boho’s free-spirited blend of soft textures, comfortable seating, and natural details create a calm, inviting environment that’s easy to love. Boho style boasts an abundance of global influence. It might include anything from ornate Parisian mirrors to Mexican pottery, or Moroccan rugs with freehand geometric patterns to Southwest patterned throw pillows.

Classic boho elements might include a plush neutral-hued Moroccan rug, a brown leather sectional, a warm throw, and plenty of toss pillows with raised fabric details for that tactile fluffy appearance. Strategically placed plants – lots of them! – add natural color and life to your boho paradise. Tassels, fringe, macramé, and crochet make great finishing touches.

In addition to beautifully layered comfort, boho mixes effortlessly with other home décor styles like industrial, rustic, modern, mid-century, and Scandinavian. For example, if you want to create a look that’s edgier and industrial, anchor your space with a charcoal sofa and wall art with black frames. All the better if your space features wood ceiling beams and an exposed brick wall. And, boho style doesn’t have to be all monochromatic neutrals. Add pops of orange, turquoise, pink or green for a more coastal version of boho. The way you mix and match colors and details will define your idea of boho style, and should always feel comfortable for the way you live.

Furniture || Personalized comfort is a boho style hallmark, and it helps to anchor your living room with a cozy sofa. Leather furniture is great for everyday comfort, and blends easily with most décor styles, including boho. Leather also gets softer and more supple with age, increasing its comfort level. To achieve an authentic, eclectic boho look, mix vintage pieces with newer items. For example, you could pair your cozy traditional sofa with a vintage industrial-style coffee table with metal legs.

For a dining room or kitchen, go with a rustic sideboard, chest, or dining set. A farmhouse white or two-tone dining set is an ideal boho look. To make your dining space more eclectic, mix different style side chairs around your table. Or, use matching side chairs with armchairs in a different style. As always, function is just as important as having a casual look you love.

Area Rugs || Enjoy endless boho styling possibilities with a plush area rug. You may even want to layer a colorful classic oriental rug over a neutral sisal rug. One of boho’s hallmarks is the way room elements are layered and mixed together, and that includes area rugs and textiles, even on walls. Boho style encourages you to add something unexpected to the room.

Details || Fringed throws, colorful toss pillows, framed art, and objects arranged in abstract configurations help define boho’s freestyle approach to decorating. A mix of patterns on upholstery, rugs, throws, curtains and toss pillows will create a livelier space, especially if your color scheme is neutral. Part of boho’s appeal is bending traditional decorating rules, especially with how you display objects or collections. For example, objects and books on open shelves can mix freely with your abundant plant collection. Large woven floor baskets are also a great way to store loose objects in a casual way.
