Put The "You" In Unique

Telling Details || Make room for accessory pieces that express your personal style

When you visit someone’s home, especially for the first time, the things that often make the biggest impression and get the conversations going, are things – the curious, striking, quirky objects that make your house a home. Guests usually ask, “Where did you find that?” Or, if it’s really unusual or abstract, “What is that?” Details and accents, in conjunction with furniture pieces, work to tell your design story, and reveal the activities and hobbies you’re passionate about. Whether you’re a world traveler, avid sports fan, animal lover, pottery collector, art aficionado or pop culture maven, it’s these one-of-a-kind objects and collections that put the “you” in unique. If you’ve ever strolled through an exotic bazaar or antiques market while on vacation, you’ve probably seen or purchased items that aren’t readily available in your local town, which makes shopping exciting and fun. Often, these items have a hand-crafted, artisanal allure with different shapes, textures or colors that make them pleasingly “different,” and, ultimately, they’re beautiful items you fall in love with and want to bring home with you – or to give as gifts.

Amazing Accents || In addition to being fun and interesting to look at, your unique treasures may trigger pleasant memories of a vacation trip, a special event you attended, or friends you were with when you acquired the objects. Items like busts, floor sculptures, clocks, or antique signs made of wood or metal will make a memorable impression, especially if they’re large scale. A dramatic painting, print or collage that fills up a wall will be equally eye catching. In addition to scale, the backdrop you use for your accents helps determine their visual importance to the room. If a highly saturated abstract painting hangs against a white wall it will pop – less so if it’s on a dark-hued wall. If you want the item to be a focal point, shining a spotlight on it will really make it striking, giving it the art gallery treatment.

Strong Supporters || Just as important as the accents themselves, your furniture – whether it’s a cocktail table, end table, console or curio – should showcase your unique treasures in their best light. If you opt for a traditional curio, having one with a mirrored back, glass shelves and light feature will truly bring your collections to life. If your accents are antiques or faux antiques, furnish the room with some distressed pieces to enhance that well-worn lived-in look. Or, try contrasting the antiques with modern glam furniture that has shiny details for an equally eclectic vibe.

Gathered Groups || Collections of like or similar objects make a strong impact, especially when they’re artfully arranged on shelves or displayed on a table or inside a curio cabinet. Depending on how many items you have, consider placing them in pairs or groups of threes, and experiment with arranging them in different ways. Taller items should generally be placed behind shorter ones, and also think about whether you’ll be adding to your collection, in which case you may need a larger table or cabinet. Likewise, if you have a pottery, vase or china collection, grouping similar colors together will look wonderfully cohesive.
