| Jordan's Furniture Receives National Adoption Award | The US Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy G. Thompson recognized 14 remarkable individuals and organizations for their dedication toward the cause of adoption. Local (Boston-area) retail brothers Eliot and Barry Tatelman from Jordan's Furniture were awarded in the category of "Public Awareness".
Jordan's Furniture began their work and support of adoption three years ago through Massachusetts Adoption Resource Exchange (MARE). Due to recruitment events, on-air media campaigns, financial support, and system work with social workers, permanent homes have been found for foster children. System barriers have also been broken down. The brothers challenged the communication and geographical barriers that existed within the foster-care system to help expedite the adoption process within the state.
"The reason why we got involved in adoption was to find permanent homes for some great kids," says Barry Tatelman, CEO of Jordan's Furniture. "It is easy to get bogged down with policies and procedures. We try to keep the big picture in mind, which is to find permanent placement for waiting children."
Eliot Tatelman, Barry's brother and President of Jordan's, adds "It is an honor to win this award. The work that we do with MARE is something we feel we should be doing, as a strong business leader in our community. To know that matches have been made through our efforts is gratifying."
Because of the aformentioned events and support, the Jordan's Furniture Initiative has resulted in positive changes in the state's adoption system and has, therefore, been a conduit toward finding permanent homes for some very special children. Jordan's Furniture and Eliot and Barry look forward to continuing their support of adoption.
